本当のプロとは　パート�掘嵜欧困望，帖�

　こんにちは。

　一時はどうなることか？　と思うほど大変だった今年の花粉症。４月に入り、目の洗浄回数が大幅に減ったことで、「全盛期は過ぎたかな？」　と感じている。ただ、鼻づまりは、まだひどく、夜は３〜４時間おきに目を覚ます。(３月は２時間おき）起きるときの典型的パターンは、　「舌が乾きすぎて、目を覚ます。」　
　
　鼻づまりを起こすと、口でしか呼吸が出来ない。すると次第に舌が乾いてくる。最後は、渇きが痛みに変わる。そして目を覚ます。以上のパターンを繰り返すのだ。枕元には、「AGノーズ」　というアレルギー症状を抑える薬を常備していて、目を覚ましては鼻に噴射する。

　だが、薬を使っても、すぐに鼻づまりは改善されない。噴射してから２０〜３０分は鼻が通らないのだ。はっきり言って　「苦しい。」　　

「もし、薬を使わなかったら、１日中、口で呼吸しなければならないのだろうか？」　
想像してみたが、それは一種の拷問に近い。「ひょっとして、気が狂うのでは？」　とも考えられた。

とにもかくにも、「もう少しの我慢。」と繰り返し念じ、頑張っている今日この頃である。

　さて、今回から２〜３回は、「ダテック総集編」　と題して、まだ話していないエピソードをまとめてお伝えしようと思う。

初回である今日のお題は「寝ずに勝つ。」　だ。

　私はダテックに一回だけ　｢君はプロだ！！」　と言ったことがある。「何をいまさら？　ダテックは紛れもない世界有数のプロだろう？」　と思われる方もいるであろう。確かにダテックは世界有数のプロテニス選手だった。しかし、ここで言う　「君はプロだ！！」　は、あなたが想像しているプロとは、ちょっと違うかもしれない。

　それは、リプトンインターナショナルテニス選手権３回戦でのこと。ダテックの相手は強打で鳴らす選手だった。その強打を見事にかわしきり、ダテックは４回戦に駒を進める。スコアは、７−６７−６。暑い日だった。マイアミの３月は、日中は裸で観戦できるほど暑い。その猛暑の中で勝った。立派だった。

　しかし、私がプロとして認めたのは、暑さに勝ったことでも、相手の強打に勝ったことでもない。ダテックが、一睡もせずに勝ったことを　「プロ！！」　と言ったのだ。そう、ダテックは　“徹夜明け”　で勝った。

　“徹夜明け”　の理由はケンカ。前日の夜、ダテックは恋人と喧嘩したのだ。一晩中、国際電話で。だが、翌朝、そんな素振りは一切見せず、彼女は私の前に現れた。

　｢おはようございます。」　
　
“ 凛”　とした声だった。

　声のトーンからは何も感じず、私も　「おはよう。」　と挨拶し返し１日が始まった。いつものように朝食を食べ、いつものように練習を行い、いつものように試合に向かった。そして、いつものように勝った。

　激戦を制した後の昼食時、何気ない会話の中でダテックは告白した。　「実は、昨日一睡もしていないんですよ」　その言葉を聞いて、私は目を丸くした。なぜなら、徹夜をしたのが、田中信弥ではなく、ダテックだったから。

　自慢ではないが、「睡眠時間より、練習時間の長い男」　と私はプロ仲間から言われていた。夜な夜な遊びにでかけるので、睡眠時間は当然少なくなる。それでも、練習だけはサボらず人より多くやった。そんな、不真面目（真面目？）　な男だ。

　 だから、私が徹夜で試合をしたと言うのなら、話は分かる。私を知っている人は、誰も驚かないだろう。しかし、徹夜をして試合をしたのは私ではない。夜遊びとは、一切無縁のダテックなのだ。だから、私は目を丸くして驚いた。

　恋人と喧嘩したのだから、心中穏やかではなかろう。試合などほっぽり出して、日本に帰リたかったのかもしれない。ダテックの性格を考えると、そうしても不思議ではなかった。
　
「昨日、寝てないんです。だから、今日はちょっとしんどい、試合やばいかも。」　このような言い訳も出てきてよさそうだ。しかし、一切、言い訳はしない。告白しているダテックの表情を観察し、私は内面を読み取ろうともした。　だが、淡々と　“事実”　を話している様にしか見えない。

　私なら言い訳したに違いない。 「昨日は寝てないんですよ〜。国際電話で喧嘩しちゃって！！」　とかなんとか。でも、わずか２４年間しか生きていない女の子ダテックは、常人とは明らかに違う行動を示した。

どんなに傷ついていようと、どんなに気分が悪かろうと、どんなに怪我をしていようと、言い訳をせず勝利をもぎ取ってくるダテック。「長期間にわたり、勝負の世界で生き抜く！！」　本物のプロ。

　プロテニスプレーヤーとしての役割、“日本テニスファンの夢を実現する”　という役割も見事に果たした。「１本、芯が通っている！！」　とは、こうゆう事を言うのだろう。

　 「こいつは正真正銘のプロだな。」　

　心の底から感じた。鳥肌がたった。本人に伝えずにはいられなかった。

　　『君はプロだ！！』　と。
